A Love Letter to Books

Despite financial troubles there’s a sense in which my childhood was immensely privileged — a pauper in the material world, I was a sultan in the world of ideas. — Erik Hoel I started by wanting to share that quote and link on my microblog and then my thoughts turned into a blog post sized comment. I decided to post it here too, then. ...

Thoughts on Setting Up a Blog

This post was first sent to my newsletter on March 19th, 2021. You really ought to subscribe :) I blame Mahe for this post. Hey, Jason! Can you please write an article on how to build a website like yours, where I can post my blogs? Check out her blogs, here and here. This one is squarely aimed at all the young ones, who are convinced that they need to be writing. (Maybe, it was me who convinced you, in the first place.) You are young (or like me, forever young) and broke (also like me). You need a place for your thoughts to call home. You need a place to write, and grow and focus more on what you want to say about life and what you study or what you work at, or the portfolio/showcase of thoughts you will slowly build. ...

Books That Underlie and Gird Cal Newport’s Philosophy of a Deep Life

This post was first sent to my newsletter on March 7th, 2021. A Rambling, Only Slightly Coherent Chat Around Git, Commits, and Stashing

What do I do, when I don’t understand the vagaries of tech? Why? I ask my friends to drum some sense into me. Here it is, warts and all for posterity (but lightly edited). If you’d love to come teach me or be part of the conversation, head on over to the IRC #learnandteach channel on the freenode server. ...

Consolidated the Subscription Page on the Site

Since I am a little out of sorts today, I decided to clean up the subscriptions options on the site. Both the mail and the rss feeds are on one page now. For easy findability1. The feeds are also categorised into work and personal, if that’s your jam. Here ya go! Subscribe! Yes, that is the technical term for it. Yes, of course I made it up. This is my domain. I get to make up everything around here! ↩︎ ...

A Eulogy for Mai

I lost my Mai today. Until my mid 30s, I rued the gulf that stood between Mai and me. While my parents insistence on teaching us English, as our primary language has benefited me immensely, in most everything I do, the one thing that I feel sad about is that I speak my mother tongue (Konkani) in a slow halting manner. 1 Which meant that I never could talk well with my grandmother. I am one of her oldest grandchildren, and I never got to have heart to heart conversations with her, the way my other cousins did. And yet … ...
